High school student Sloane Keeley Wehman is an aspiring Classicist and is passionate about education in the Classics. She established Calypso Classics to help students connect - one website to provide helpful resources and educational information. When Sloane was in Middle School she realized that the Classics community was a wonderfully supportive family of teachers and students and she was so fortunate to have mentors to help guide her. Through her education, she has realized that not every student has the same exposure to Classics or the opportunity to learn Latin that she has. Calypso Classics is designed to help students connect with other students dedicated to the study all things of the Ancient world - Greek and Roman culture, Latin and Greek language, Greek mythology - to help navigate their participation in Certamen, the Junior Classical League, help establish a school classical club, researching college Classics programs and provide links to helpful website for Classics related learning.
Sloane attends Bryn Mawr School in Baltimore, Maryland and studies Latin at the Gilman School. She is the founder of the Bryn Mawr Classical Club, current Historian for the Maryland Junior Classical League MDJCL, former President of the MDJCL and has successfully competed in school, state, regional and national Certamen within the National Junior Classical League.
Committed to education, in 2021 Sloane founded the first chapter of Aequora in Baltimore City, and teaches Latin and Classics to middle school students at the Govans School and Roland Park Elementary. Through her work with the Paideia Institute, she is able to provide a Classics curriculum to students after school - it is the most rewarding thing she has ever done.
To help fund her volunteer work, Sloane enjoys making beautiful bead jewelry and has raised thousands of dollars selling her pieces. Check out her jewelry on instagram @calypsoclassics and Etsy.
Sloane is an editorial intern with Professor Gregory Nagy's Classical Continuum and enjoys collaborating about all things Ancient. Her editorial interests intersect with her love of Latin and she is very thankful for the opportunity to be involved.
