The purpose of the NJCL is to encourage and promote interest in and an appreciation of the language, literature, and culture of ancient Greece and Rome. It is an organization that holds an annual convention, and is an excellent opportunity to connect in a meaningful way with other students. CONNECT to NJCL

My school had no active Classical Club when I was interested in joining. We had Latin classes in my middle school at Bryn Mawr in Baltimore, MD, and my teacher told me about the MDJCL - Maryland Junior Classical League - our state chapter, and I started researching opportunities to get involved. It turns out that the school across the street, Gilman, which is where I would be taking Latin in high school had a registered club with the MDJCL. I reached out to our state chair, and she recommended that I try to start a chapter or become a Member at Large and participate with the boys school. Well, I didn't know of anyone else who wanted to do Certamen, so I became a Member-at-Large with my state chapter of MDJCL, and I started to compete as a beginner by myself. Since the Gilman Classics Club was a high school club all of the students were much more advanced than me. It didn't matter to me, I was just happy to be involved! Soon, I was in high school, and because it was Covid, everything was virtual, which actually made it a bit easier to collaborate and become a team with other state students. I founded my schools Classics Club, but because membership was low I stayed as a Member-at-Large. I was able to partner with Gilman for Certamen, because we were stronger together than apart. I became really active in the MDJCL and was elected President for 2021-2022, and then Historian for 2022-2023. I am excited to attend the National Junior Classical League's annual meeting in July at Emory in Atlanta! It will be the first time I attend in person (not virtual) and I cannot wait!!!! The bottom line is if there is a will, there is a way. Everyone in this community is excited to have others be interested in involved, and are supportive of the participation! Email, reach out, join, compete! It is really fun and a great way to connect in a subject we are all passionate about!
